LABORATORIES AND INTERNSHIPS IN PRESENCE DURING THE PANDEMIC

During the pandemic we obtained that every CIBIO laboratory had to take at least one Bachelor intern, allowing to do the internship in presence despite the occupancy limitations. Every year had guaranteed the in presence participation to at least one characterizing lab.

MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS II TUTORING

A tutoring for the Mathematics and Statistics II course was implemented thanks to the collaboration with the professor and the Bachelor coordinator.

MID-TERM SURVEY

Mid-term surveys were introduced to have feedback on the courses, in order to improve them faster.

POS IN THE CANTEEN AND WATER COOLERS

Now it is now possible to pay through the app at the vending machines and to recharge the canteen card with POS at the Povo cafè. Take-away service is now active in the canteen and water coolers are present in every building.

CO.SCIENZA

Together with UNITiN association we organized Co.Scienza scientific festival where events both with external guests and professors of our university took place.

EXTRAORDINARY EXAM SESSIONS DURING THE PANDEMIC

Personal extraordinary exam sessions were added for the students with 12 or less CFU, this to facilitate access to the thesis discussion extraordinary session of May 2022.

SALVAMATRICOLE (SaveTheFreshMans)

Salvamatricole was proposed again: it is a welcome-event where we answered the Freshmen doubts and helped them to fit in the University life.

ELECTRICAL SOCKETS

Electrical sockets were added to the BUP deks.

GOALS

DIDACTIS

PERSONALIZATION OF THE BACHELOR'S CURRICULUM
Increase the number of credits for the elective courses, by adding new teachings about microbiology, computational biology, neurology (Neuroanatomy course) and genome editing, to help building a solid preparation for the Master’s tracks that are currently less in-depth, and to allow a better customization of the Bachelor’s curriculum.

NEW PROGRAMS FOR MATH COURSES
Revise the courses of Mathematics and Statistics, offered both in the Bachelor and in the Masters, to highlight more the notions that are useful for biotechnological research.

REVISE THE BIOLOGY OF THE ORGANISMS COURSE
Decrease, in the Biology of the Organisms course, the zoology part while focusing on the anatomy one. Convert a part of the credits into an Histology course, to make the contents of this course more useful for the other topics studied in the Bachelor’s.

STRENGTHEN THE MICROBES MASTER’S TRACK
While waiting for the new employments, already planned, organize conferences about topics related to the Microbes areas, to supply for the absence of elective courses about this.

GRADUATION SESSIONS
Extend to all cohorts the graduation sessions of September and October, at the moment only reserved respectively to the Bachelor and to the Masters, in particular to allow third year students to graduate in another session before the deadline for the Master’s admission.

POST-EXAM SURVEY
Strengthen the dialogue between representatives and the Joint Committee teachers-students to facilitate solving the issues encountered by students in the various courses, in particular by using the post-exam questionnaires.

ADMISSION AND SCROLLING IN THE RANKINGS
Ask to organize again three admission deadlines for the Bachelor’s, in April, July and September, since starting from next year they will only be two, in February and April, in order to scroll the rankings on a more recent waiting list.
Set the last scrolling at the end of October, to facilitate making up for the lost lectures and laboratories and to allow participation in the midterms, thus reducing the critical aspects linked to the frequent repêchages during the first year.

LABORATORIES, INTERNSHIPS, THESIS

SAFETY COURSES
Define clear and precise guidelines for the safety courses needed for the laboratories, and improve the communication with the staff. Guarantee the availability in English of both the courses and the modules.

OVERLAPPING LABORATORY TOPICS
Find alternatives to the activities and the experiments which are repeated in the laboratories of different courses, to learn more practical skills.

INTERNAL, EXTERNAL AND INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIPS
Continue to dialogue with the Direction about the changes in the calls for the internships abroad, to find possible solutions (such as reducing the credits for the thesis abroad from 75 to 60) and to have an efficient communication.
Institutionalize a moment to present the CIBIO laboratories and the possible internship/thesis projects, for both the Bachelor and the Masters.
Establish a programmed meeting to tell the last year students about experiences, advice and information from students who have already done internships, especially if abroad.

MORE ERASMUS DESTINATIONS
Formalize the courses taught in English in the Bachelor’s educational offer, especially the third year courses, to make CIBIO more attractive in the international scenario.

OPTIONAL REVIEW THESIS
Guarantee the possibility to choose between an experimental or review thesis, and ensure that the review option will remain as an alternative and not the main choice.

COMMUNICATION AND EVENTS

MAILING LIST FOR DEPARTMENT-STUDENTS COMMUNICATION
Optimize the communication between the Department and the students, creating an official mailing list cibionews, which, in parallel to the existing cibiopeople for the Department staff, can inform the students about seminars and events, which otherwise are not sufficiently promoted.

INFORMATION IN ENGLISH
Translate regulations, degree programs and documentations in English, in order to make them accessible to the International students.

NETWORKING AND APPROACHING THE RESEARCH WORLD
Promote activities, both convivial and professional, to include CIBIO students, professors and researchers, in order to favor the networking. Moreover, organize informative events to present postgraduate opportunities, also outside of the Academic career.

STUDENT PARTICIPATION
Organize again Department plenaries, a moment to socialize and meet other students, discuss problems and ideas, and get advice from people from older cohorts.
Collaborate with the university associations such as O.W.L. and promote events of scientific interest such as the Co.Scienza festival.

EREDITÀ 2.0 AND SALVAMATRICOLE
Enrich and maintain updated the Eredità 2.0., which until now collected the materials of the Bachelor courses, integrating also materials regarding the Master courses.
Make the Salvamatricole a permanent project, collecting all the material presented at the beginning of the year by the UNITiN representatives about courses, tutoring, labs, books, libraries, canteens, Esse3 instructions, public transports, eccetera.

IDEAS FOR THE QCB

ORIENTATION BEFORE THE ADMISSION
Improve the QCB attractivity by increasing the communication and promotion both outside and inside UniTrento. For example, advertise the interdisciplinary tracks of the Bachelors in Computer science, Physics and Maths, and promote more events and seminars in the biocomputational field.

ORIENTATION FOR THE CURRICULUM
Propose orientation activities to help build the curriculum choosing the elective courses with more awareness. For example, organize meetings with past students from various QCB tracks and Bachelors, who are already in the working world.

REORGANIZATION OF THE FIRST YEAR COURSES
Add elective courses before the beginning of the lectures to strengthen the mathematics and statistics area, a fundamental competence for the QCB which is instead often teached starting from a more advanced level compared to what is learned in the Bachelors, especially in the biotechnological track.

MORE IMPORTANCE TO THE THESIS
Add the possibility to convert a part of the credits assigned to the elective courses in additional credits for the thesis, to give more value to research projects that require more months of work, as it is already in the CMB Master.

STUDENTS OFFICE AND EXAMS
Obtain in advance from the students office the exams date, the graduation committees and lectures timetable, so there is enough time to solve eventual overlappings and critical aspects, and publish sooner the final dates.
Require the presence of a witness (student or not) during all the oral exams).

SPACES AND CLEANING
Identify spaces (room A216 and A217, the “acquario”, the canteen outside of meal hours) that can be used for group study. Add electrical outlets in the classrooms that don’t have it already.
Request a more accurate cleaning of classrooms, toilets and commons areas, and that at least some classrooms and toilets are left open until 7:30 pm for individual and group study. Ensure that the courtyard paving is replaced with a more durable one, and that maintenance of the structures takes place more frequently.

CONVIVIALITY AND MEALS FROM HOME
Open the room on the ground floor of the library as a relax area and add table soccer in the common areas.
Convert the aquarium and tables in Povo 2 as spaces with microwaves for lunchtime, and reopen the room in FBK that has microwaves (it was available before the pandemic). Install in the courtyards temporary covered structures, equipped with tables, for eating meals brought from home in a dry and warm place.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Increase the number of 5/ buses, especially with articulated buses, also adding bus rides from the student residences. Pave the Vietnam and delineate parking spaces to optimize space. Ask more space from the Town Council to have parkings close to the University, especially because with the future Povo3 construction the Vietnam will become unavailable.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Add more ashtrays and bins for waste sorting (included organic waste and glass) in the courtyards. Find more ecological solutions to dry hands in the toilets. Make every building’s climate control independent from the central system (introduce also sustainable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels). Switch off the lights during the night in order to limit waste.
